BLIS K12 is an extremely safe yet powerful strain of a bacteria called Streptococcus salivarius which normally occurs in the mouth and throat. S. salivarius is a naturally occurring oral microbe that appears in newborns shortly after birth. While most people have the non-specific S. salivarius populations, an estimated 2% of the human population has an abundant amount of more potent strains like BLIS K12. Studies show that children with naturally occurring microbial strains like K12 are better able to maintain mouth and throat health.
S. salivarius K12 was discovered and isolated by renowned microbiologist Professor John Tagg at the University of Otago in New Zealand. His dream and passion was to find alternative, natural solutions for supporting ear, nose and throat health, based on his own experience as a child. At age 12, he experienced a throat health challenge. After this experience, Dr. Tagg was determined to find “a better way” to help support throat health in children. A microbiologist by training, Dr. Tagg focused on naturally occurring bacteria to create probiotics for the oral cavity that support throat health.
To find such a probiotic, Dr. Tagg followed New Zealand school children through many years, analyzing their saliva samples looking for differences. A breakthrough came when Dr. Tagg and his team isolated a unique strain of S. salivarius (K12) from a healthy child who over a six-year period exhibited remarkable throat health . Work began to develop this strain and bring this next generation of advanced probiotics to market.
The availability of BLIS K12 in various products marks the first time that anyone has successfully developed a probiotic specifically for mouth and throat health. It is now available in chewable tablets, fast-melt tablets, lozenges, chewing gum, and fun stick-pack powders that can be sprinkled directly onto your tongue and then swallowed.
